The long planned project to build a new bridge carrying I-5 between the states of Oregon and Washington in the West US is moving forward slowly. Tolling will be used to help pay for the project, which has been long delayed.
Construction could commence in 2026, once the financing model has been determined. Toll charges will be revealed in 2025.
The Interstate Bridge Replacement project has taken longer than planned to reach this point. But the work is needed as the existing link is no longer able to cope with traffic demands and does not meet the latest safety standards.
The bridge will replace the existing structure carrying I-5 and which links Portland in Oregon with Vancouver in Washington. Building the new bridge is expected to cost $6.3-7.5 billion. The authorities in Washington State are intending to provide US$1 billion of the necessary funding and are looking for their counterparts in Oregon State to deliver a similar finance package for the project.
